About Progressive Jewish Alliance (PJA)

Progressive Jewish Alliance was founded in Los Angeles in 1999.  Since our founding, PJA has reinvigorated the progressive Jewish landscape and created a new model of Jewish community engagement.  The mission of Progressive Jewish Alliance is to engage Jews of diverse backgrounds to learn, lead, and act in our communities to create a more just and equal society.  Our vision of social transformation is inspired by our shared Jewish values and realized through partnership with local and national allies.  We seek to change the world by serving as the progressive voice in the Jewish community and the Jewish voice in the progressive community.

Progressive Values and Jewish Values

PJA is grounded in the belief that the progressive values we champion and act upon are at the heart of both Jewish tradition and Jewish secular history and that our community should reflect those values.  Contemporary Jews, with a hope springing from either youth or experience, embrace the legacy of activism that has driven this country's great movements for change -- from labor to civil rights and beyond.  For us, and for the emerging generations of Jews, the most urgent, authentic expression of Judaism in daily life is often the act of building a better, more just and sustainable world for all.
